Decantation pond for non-ferrous minerals located near Tăuţii de Sus will obtain full funding for ecological procedures. Besides that, the former headquarters of the mining company REMIN, located in the center of Baia Mare, will be assessed and capitalized, the Minister of Economy, Radu Miruţă, announced during a press conference.
“Regarding the situation in Maramureş, there are some ponds left from former exploitations which cause serious problems to people. And at the Ministry of Economy, there is a company called Conversmin which has been consuming a lot of money for many years and many things have not been accomplished because the approach was to give a little bit of the very little money you have for each of these ponds that need to be ecologized. What I have observed is that the money was being rolled over without making any progress. A little was done in a year, then a break was taken, and two years later the work had to be restarted because if they are not finished, like in a house where there is no roof and it rains, the plate gets damaged (…) I had a discussion with the minister Buzoianu, who had prioritized from the environmental perspective which is the order in which these ponds should be ecologized (…) This week I signed a government decision project which is under approval. After we have identified the sums of money (…) one of the ponds in Maramureş County, specifically the one in Tăuţii de Sus, will receive the full amount required for ecologizing”, stated Minister Radu Miruţă, who was visiting the county, according to Agerpres.
Regarding other sterile ore ponds with non-ferrous minerals in Maramureş County, the Minister of Economy mentioned that a decision will only be made after a specialized expertise is received.
“As for the other ponds, there are discussions about whether there are precious metals or not. There are polymetals, there are fewer precious polymetals (…) I asked state institutions which should have some concrete data, which some say they don’t have or don’t want to give, to really see if reprocessing of those ponds is justified to capitalize what technology 20 years ago might not have allowed. After we receive these data, a decision will be made whether it is worth reprocessing to capitalize a deposit of the Romanian state, or go directly to ecologizing. And if it will be reprocessed, at the end there will still be ecologizing. Ecologizing those ponds is not an option, it is an obligation of the Romanian state. That there are not enough funds for all of them due to historical reasons, they were not well coordinated, there were various interests that blocked such decisions, this time, during this period, these are the steps we will take. We see the value from there, the dimension of those deposits, if it’s justified”, Radu Miruţă stated.
Concerning the status of the former central headquarters of the REMIN mining company, located in the center of Baia Mare, and the situation of the company, the minister emphasized that he is awaiting a complete report from the director.
“I expect data from REMIN’s director regarding this building in the center. The concern is if the city hall (Baia Mare, ed.) can handle it: we put everyone at the table – A.A.A.S. (Authority for State Assets Administration), REMIN, City Hall – at a fair price, but I need to see what is done with the money received (…) Some millions are taken, if it is taken for this building. I will not move any chess piece until there is a plan with a start and an end”, Radu Miruţă said.
The Minister of Economy further stated that the administrator of REMIN was recently replaced to unlock the company’s stagnation situation, which has been insolvent for almost 16 years.
“There was quite a dangerous stagnation there (…) The special administrator was changed a week ago, because this is within the latitude of the supervising administration, that is, the ministry. And it wasn’t someone from USR who left, or someone from PSD to be replaced, as I hear in these poems that I hear invented. It was a man who has major experience in state participation within the ministry, a specialist of the ministry who was given the objective of unlocking the situation at REMIN, whom I appointed there. I also went and saw the former REMIN headquarters, the one in the new center (…) It’s a shame, no matter who it belongs to; whether it belongs to the ministry, to the city hall, it is a building of the Romanian state (…) I also talked to the director of REMIN, in the former office in that building which doesn’t look too bad compared to others that look worse in this country (…) He will make an analysis, he will come (…) to the ministry to see what the data look like. Remin has a debt of 597 million lei, the main creditor is A.A.A.S., formerly AVAS, we assess what the steps are, what is the correct value for that building to regain its functionality. Now it is not functional. If the city hall can take care of it, we’ll see if steps are made in this direction”, Radu Miruţă added.
